The Market Theatre, based in the vibrant inner-city suburb of Newtown in Johannesburg, South Africa, was opened in 1976, operating as an independent, non-racial theatre during the country’s apartheid regime. It is named after the site on which it stands, which was originally a produce market, also known as the Old Indian Market or the Newtown Market, which closed after 60 years of trade and relocated to another part of the city. The Market Theatre was renamed John Kani Theatre in 2014 after the renowned South African stage actor John Kani.

Watched the Chris Hani musical. Amazing show. Talented student effort. Venue is comfortable. Parked at the nearby mall and walked across. Lots of eating places around the theatre. Wheelchair friendly

It's become so classy with the Newtown Mall just behind it.. It is really a great place for an outing with the girls or even with Bae!! The shows are always amazing!! Just wish it could be advertised more so that more people can enjoy all it has to offer... It's also great that they honour their regular patrons now and then...

Wonderful play (Daily Bread). So nice to return to the Market Theatre after so many years.

It has been quite a number of years since I last visited Market Theatre, but tonight's stunning performance of 'Another One's Bread' was a great reminder of the caliber of productions that come alive on the stages of this beautiful and historically significant venue. The development in the area of Newtown only further adds to the experience.

Spent the evening watching The Suitcase, produced by Desmond Dube. What a fantastic evening out, with some spectacular theatrical performances. The story of an incredibly sad couple during Apartheid times. The Market Theatre is a beautiful historical monument, which was a powerful tool in fighting the constructs of Apartheid. Suggest parking at the mall and strolling to the theatre - both are safe to do.
