GUM (Russian: ГУМ, pronounced [ˈɡum], an abbreviation of Russian: Глáвный универсáльный магазѝн, tr. Glávnyj Universáĺnyj Magazín, literally "Main Universal Store") is the name of the main department store in many cities of the former Soviet Union, known as State Department Store (Russian: Государственный универсальный магазин, tr. Gosudarstvennyi Universalnyi Magazin) during the Soviet times. Similarly-named stores were found in some Soviet republics and post-Soviet states. The most famous GUM is the large store in the Kitai-gorod part of Moscow facing Red Square. It is currently a shopping mall. Prior to the 1920s, the location was known as the Upper Trading Rows (Russian: Верхние торговые ряды, tr. Verhnije torgovye rjady). Nearby, facing The Bolshoi Theatre, is a building very similar to GUM, known formerly as the Middle Trading Rows, now the TsUM, about the same size as a large North American shopping mall, with a glass roof.

Great mall right at Red Square. Basically it’s a shopping complex where all the big brands are present. Once you get the hang of the place, it’s quite easy to navigate the place. For first timers, staircases are at both ends and the middle. So if you need to get between levels, check where you are. You can use Bosco Cafe as a point to indicate the middle of the mall. There is a supermarket at the 3rd parallel but mainly carry imported brands and items. If you are looking for local or simple stuff, this supermarket is not the right place.

This is a gorgeous mall. I love that there are fresh flowers everywhere. The classical music that plays is a bonus! There are brands for everyone, and I like that there is actually a lot of high-end stores. I can't wait to come back next June!

Visually stunning shopping mall right on the red square. It's worth walking through and shopping if you can afford spending in the trendy shops.

Peek back in time a bit... even though it's all updated... as this was one of those shining examples of the soviet success. GUM was/is a popular visit for locals and tourists (adjacent to Red Square) alike. Fairly spendy shopping here. One place is the soviet era restaurant located inside. Requires quite a wait but from what I am told by locals, it is very true to form for soviet era on food and service set up.
