Dhobi means washerman in hindi and ghat means location
It was built by british in 19th century to wash their dirty soilders linen.
But now it's under the indian government

They pay 300 inr every month to the government
Mainly they get the clothes from the small hotels, small laundry, hospital and the garment factory nowadays very less clothes from the residential because most of them have washing machine
And daily over 200000 clothes wash everyday in dhobi ghat

The area is an amazing place for photographers to click rows of concrete pockets of washing platforms.. n laundry sorted according to their colors, however the working conditions of the dhobis are not so great. Spending hours in water and soap isn't healthy.
